Do you need to check a state tax return even if you are a federal nonresident alien? Federal and state residency systems are separate. Use the map to open the official tax authority for each state and compare broad individual income-tax context.
The map covers all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. A “no broad individual income tax” label does not mean the state has no taxes, filing requirements or special taxes.
50-State Nonresident Tax Map
Select a state to review broad individual income-tax context, the separate-state-tax warning, and the official state tax authority.
When a state review is especially useful
Check the state where you lived, worked, performed services, owned or rented property, or had withholding. Part-year moves and remote work can create a state question even when federal nonresident status is clear.
Compare states without mixing their rules
Each state can define residency, source income, allocation and filing thresholds differently. Use the comparison as an orientation tool, then follow the official state link for the tax year you are filing.
